Simulation Infrastructure Intern – Algorithm Development and Applications Group (ADAG)
Job Description:
ZF TRW produces an array of crash-sensing Restraint Systems which minimize occupant injury during vehicle crash events. Multiple sensors (including acceleration, angular rate, pressure, occupant status, as well as radar and camera) are sampled and conditioned to determine when and with what force to deploy Restraint System elements, using vehicle / occupant-dynamics-based algorithms. ADAG develops the algorithms and vehicle-specific calibrations for the features of these systems, including Front, Rear, Side, and Rollover Collision Detection/Classification, Pedestrian Collision Detection, Occupant Classification -- all used to manage specific single / multi-stage airbag deployments, seat belt pretensioning, collision event data recording, and emergency call notification.

Under the direction of a technical mentor, the Simulation Infrastructure Intern will work within a global team comprised of controls, software, and tools specialists to maintain and extend a sophisticated distributed simulations toolset while continually seeking more efficient methods in support of deliverables to customers, as well as other assignments related to our algorithm development process and tool chain. Strong programming skills, with emphasis on well-structured coding and testing is a highly desired.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Support special projects related to development process, tools, or HW infrastructure improvement.
  • Maintain and develop the computing HW and SW infrastructure which supports execution of SIL simulations used by development teams (called “Distributed Simulation Environment”). Manage a document-based database, including performance analysis and writing queries. Maintain and extend our web simulation dashboard/scheduling application.
  • Work with senior development engineers and technical mentors to gain expertise in crash sensing algorithms and algorithm development in general.
  • Design and execute tests for simulation infrastructure components.
  • Support other related tasks in the area of Algorithm SW construction, verification and sensor modeling (MATLAB/Simulink, Mathematica).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience or university coursework in computer programming, dynamics and controls is desirable.
  • Knowledge of MATLAB, C/C++/C#, Mathematica, CouchDB and NodeJS/RxJS.
  • Experience with automotive data acquisition systems.

Required Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related).
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • A good understanding of computer networks and familiarity with web technologies: HTTP protocol, REST services, JavaScript.
  • Experience with Python, GIT, database handling and functional programming.
