Job Description

This position will work as a member of ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Steering Engineering Laboratory in Lafayette, Indiana, to support component and vehicle level testing. Specific products include Commercial Vehicle steering gears, pumps and columns. The primary objectives of this role are to working closely with the development engineers and lab technicians to support data acquisition instrumentation systems and testing requirements. The successful candidate for this position must have a broad background in automotive testing, proficiency in data acquisition software, software development, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and data acquisition instrumentation systems.


Position Tasks/Responsibilities:
  • Set up data acquisition instrumentation for product validation, quality audit, warranty analysis, line-return analysis and other special requests from Product Engineering.
  • Use data acquisition instrumentation and computers to control and monitor lab testing. Record and report results as needed.
  • Perform on-vehicle evaluations – instrument vehicles for product testing with data acquisition systems for system evaluation our products. Several repetitions may be required depending on the test results for development projects. Record and report results as needed.
  • Provide troubleshooting of electronic control systems and data acquisition systems.
  • Provide assistance to others when needed and share responsibility for efficient lab operation.
  • Utilize 5S methodology, keep the work area clean and orderly.
  • Meet testing timelines for urgent test projects.
  • Respond to internal and external customers to identify and troubleshoot product issues through testing.
  • Some travel will be required - approx. 10% domestic and 2% international.
Essential Education, Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience in an engineering field, 5+ years experience preferred
  • Experience working with electronic equipment such as, DVMs, Oscilloscopes, Frequency generators and Sound level meters.
  • Experience with setting up and troubleshooting data acquisition instrumentation systems that measure parameters such as hydraulic flow, pressure, mechanical torque, force, vibration and acceleration.
  • Demonstrated competence with electronic bench work (soldering, troubleshooting, cable construction)
  • Ability to read electrical/electronic schematics and mechanical blueprints.
  • LabVIEW and C# programming skills.
  • Database design and maintenance for lab test stand data acquisition systems.
