GENERAL SUMMARY

Responsible for the continued development, implementation of a complete Health, Safety, Environmental Program. Provides leadership in all health and safety related activities for employees, supervisors and managers. Will maintain and enhance a positive employee relations environment.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Responsible for the implementation of accident/incident reduction activities, including but not limited to the following: ergonomics, behavioral based safety, standardized work, safety training and awareness and safety auditing.
  • Provides guidance to employees in relation to any safety concerns, engage employees in safety initiatives and ensure that all Company safety procedures are strictly adhered to.
  • Remain up to date with and ensure the Company’s Health and Wellness programs comply with all Health and Safety guidelines. (OHSAS)
  • Ensure emergency and contingency response procedures are in compliance and adhered to, including training, and waste manifest reporting.
  • Responsible for the Joint Health and Safety Committee. Will represent the Company as Co-Chairperson of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Coordinate regular workplace safety inspections and identify potential hazards. Track all open hazards and issues to ensure timely completion.
  • Work with the Engineering Department for required changes to eliminate/minimize job hazards.
  • Maintain the facilities chemical management system that includes tracking of all chemicals used at the facility and the related MSDS.
  • Provide all departments with technical assistance on chemicals, waste, environmental regulations.
  • Responsible for environmental concerns, including air emissions, noise, chemicals, storm and sanitary water discharges.
  • Ensure health and safety and environmental policies and procedures are carried out in accordance regulatory requirements and provide corrective actions if necessary.
  • Provide regular contact to modified workers. Ensure return to work plans are developed and adhered to. Utilize return to work specialists if necessary.
  • Review and document all accident/incident investigation reports and develop corrective actions to decrease number of workplace injuries.
  • Responsible for WSIB claims management with the goal of zero lost-time claims.
  • Liaison with external and internal sources pertaining to areas of responsibility. (i.e.) medical authorities, safety consultants and government inspectors.
  • Utilize an Ergonomist if necessary to ensure that Job Hazard Analysis, PDA, and RULA analysis are up to date as well as utilizing appropriate ergonomic measurement tools.
  • Prepare and submit Government reports as required by applicable regulations (local, provincial, federal)
  • Generate and ensure regular safety talks are completed
  • All other duties as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS

University degree or College diploma in Occupational Health and Safety discipline, or equivalent in experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Three to five years of experience as Safety Specialist in an Industrial environment.
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Industrial Regulations, Fire Code, and all other pertinent health and safety related legislation.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of environmental legislation and EMS requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
  • Computer experience using Microsoft Word, and Excel is required.
  • The ability to analyze and solve issues and meet deadlines.
  • The ability to interpret and apply Company policies to related events is mandatory.
  • Must be a high-energy result oriented individual.
  • Must have outstanding interpersonal, communication, organizational and leadership skills.
