ZF is a leading developer and innovator in the rapidly growing field of Advanced Driver-Assist Systems (ADAS). These camera- and radar-based technologies assist drivers by providing information and acting on environmental data at the front, side and rear of vehicles to help warn drivers of impending danger. They can also provide intuitive cues or actions such as braking and steering inputs to help “coach” the driver to stay in lane or offer convenience functions like Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Collision Mitigation Braking (CMB), Following Distance Indication (FDI), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Centering Assist (LCA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), and Surround View - 360 degree Bird's Eye View with 3D image perspective and integrated safety.


As a member of the optical engineering discipline team, the successful candidate will be engaged in a globally matrixed organization generating innovation through design and development of industry leading hardware solutions for vision systems in and around the vehicle. The candidate will interact in an environment that fosters collaboration, embraces challenges, and celebrates successes. Working as a member of a global team, the candidate will have the opportunity to support current ZF products in the marketplace as well as to develop the next generation of ZF products supporting enhanced driver perception and safety.

  • Represent the optical engineering discipline as part of globally matrixed teams developing automotive cameras for Advanced Driver-Assist Systems
  • Provide optical component design specifications
  • Develop system/component optical test plans and processes
  • Lead/support discussions with lens suppliers
  • Create/analyze optical models of components and systems
  • Support system design reviews
  • Create, maintain, and release component level specifications and camera system test documentation
  • Support optical testing and planning over the product development cycle
  • Develop optical test instrumentation
  • Interface with software and algorithm teams to ensure optical test capabilities are implemented according to the product development cycle
  • Prepare optical test reports
  • Lead customer facing discussions related to optical topics
  • Provide support to ZF manufacturing locations related to optical topics
  • Understand automotive customer requirements, project milestones, technology relevance and capability

  • 7+ years of optical design or automotive camera experience
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of complex optical systems (multi-element lens systems)
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of optical design tools
  • Knowledge of engineering review methods
  • Knowledge of image sensor technologies
  • Knowledge of VIS/IR cameras
  • Demonstrated ability to breakdown large complex problems and to provide multiple resolution paths

  • BS degree in engineering
  • Strong Microsoft suite skills including PowerPoint, Excel and Word
  • Ability to communicate with and understand the needs of the cross-functional team across all levels (engineers to executives)
  • Strong sense of urgency and personal commitment
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents
  • Highly motivated and disciplined in time management
  • Capability to use lab tools and equipment
