The Role

An exciting opportunity exists to spend a year with a world-class team responsible for delivering complete braking systems solutions to vehicle manufacturers in the UK and around the world. ZF is one of the world’s largest producers of braking systems, supplying all major vehicle manufacturers. The foundation brakes for vehicle manufacturers in the UK are designed and developed in ZF’s prestigious technical centre in Solihull.

The design of braking systems is extremely challenging requiring safety-critical performance at competitive costs. ZF leads the field in many areas of design and research, and delivers cutting-edge technologies such as electric park brake and systems solutions for hybrid drive trains.

This is a very fast-paced sector requiring product design and problem-solving skills for programmes with short design cycle times and high production volumes. The role involves CAD design of disc and drum brake applications, plus exposure to the testing and analysis of braking products.

What our students do

As a member of the car brakes design team, you will experience and contribute to the product development process from customer needs to delivered products, this will involve:
  • Understanding customer needs and how these are translated into engineering requirements.
  • Production of CAD models and associated drawings of disc and drum brake components and assemblies in adherence with company procedures and design standards.
  • Factors affecting the provision of components and assemblies for customer and internal validation.
  • Validation of mechanical, hydraulic and electro mechanical braking products via testing, analysis, with subsequent presentation of data showing how we surpass the customer needs.

What we are looking for

  • Successful progression in an Automotive / Mechanical Engineering degree.
  • ‘A’ level (or equivalent) maths and physics, plus GCSE (or equivalent) grade B or above in English & Maths.
  • Interest in learning.
  • Able to work effectively within a multi-disciplined team.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm, self motivation, and efficient organizational skills

  • Proficient in mechanical CAD packages, preferably CATIA V5.
  • Experience of mechanical optimisation packages such as Ansys.
  • Awareness of Six Sigma or statistical techniques.
  • Flexibility to thrive in an exciting, fast paced working environment.
