Algorithm Application Supervisor -- Algorithm Development and Applications Group (ADAG)

Job Description:

ZF produces an array of crash-sensing Restraint Systems which minimize occupant injury during vehicle crash events. Multiple sensors (including acceleration, angular rate, pressure, occupant status, as well as radar and camera) are sampled and conditioned to determine when and with what force to deploy Restraint System elements, using vehicle / occupant-dynamics-based algorithms. ADAG develops the algorithms and vehicle-specific calibrations for the features of these systems, including Front, Rear, Side, and Rollover Collision Detection/Classification, Pedestrian Collision Detection, Occupant Classification -- all used to manage specific single / multi-stage airbag deployments, seat belt pretensioning, collision event data recording, and emergency call notification.

The Algorithm Application Supervisor will work within a global team of controls, software, and tools specialists to produce algorithm / calibration software releases. These releases are provided to application project teams, supporting deliverables to customers (vehicle manufacturers).

This position is responsible for managing Restraint System Crash Sensing Algorithm development for Honda and HKMC projects, with 6+ direct reports. The team is responsible to deliver calibrated crash algorithms for production vehicles, using customer provided crash data and requirements, with associated technical analysis and performance verification materials.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary technical interface to customer and overseas development teams supporting associated customer projects.
  • Possess or develop expert knowledge of the crash sensing algorithm and calibrations, as well as customer and regulatory requirements OR
  • Possess expert knowledge in the development of calibrations for embedded automotive controllers such as ADAS, ESC, Powertrain, Steering, Park Brake, etc., with understanding of calibration development methodology and experience working directly with OEM customers.
  • Capture and communicate customer functional requirements to internal teams, and drive the development of performance calibrations per customer requirements, based on internal best practices according to a maintained plan.
  • Negotiate performance objectives with customers when faced with trade-off conflicts.
  • Manage HIL stand HW needed to support calibration development.
  • Actively manage development plan. Assure analysis tasks and performance summary reports are executed on time.
  • Supporting hiring and training of new employees.
  • Support product roadmap with insight and ideas based on customer feedback and team learning.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of experience in Restraints, Powertrain, Brake Control, ADAS or other embedded automotive controller calibration development, including direct involvement with customers
  • Experience or university coursework in Systems, Dynamics, and Controls
  • Understanding of embedded-controller digital signal processing, sampling, filtering techniques
  • Knowledge of passive and active safety sensing technologies, and methodologies for managing signal uncertainties and errors
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Matlab/Simulink, C/C++. Familiarity with Perl and Python programming languages a plus.
    • Vector CAN & LIN tools (CANalyzer, CANoe) or equivalent (NeoVI).
    • Testing / debugging embedded systems and electrical circuits using in-circuit emulators, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes
    • Embedded system Hardware-In-the-Loop tester setups and test case development
  • Working knowledge of PTC Integrity, DOORs or equivalent tools

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical / Mechanical / Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or equivalent. Master's degree preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills
  • Must be able to travel to customer and ZF locations overseas (2-8 weeks per year)
