Sr. Manager - Calibration, Controls & Software

Position Summary: The Sr. Manager - Calibration, Controls & Software is responsible for leading the development and implementation of controls engineering and software and system test solutions as well as calibration initiatives for the Automatic Transmissions business unit in North America by planning and meeting scheduled targets for calibration and related activities. This includes capacity planning, resource planning, and target performance comparison, as well as providing technical direction and guidance to engineering leads and personnel. In addition, providing strategic direction to managers of software testing, controls and calibration as well as responsibility for the annual operating budget and the planning, procurement and maintenance of equipment for engineering purposes. The scope of products includes, but is not limited to, automatic transmissions.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategic business initiatives, staffing plans, risk assessments, and internal solutions to improve applications engineering and product development standards, performance, and processes in the region.
  • Manage and oversee all controls, vehicle calibration and software test activities within the regional business unit to support internal and external customers.
  • Support the annual business planning process for the business unit by determining demand for headcount, equipment investment and operating expenses based on planned development programs.
  • Cooperate and share experience with all Automatic Transmissions product development groups within the business unit globally.
  • Ensure that product development activities comply with all ZF standard requirements and guidelines including business unit, product line, and site-specific standards.
  • Monitor progress and completion of all work-packages and tasks within timing, quality and cost targets.
  • Ensure prompt support of the quoting process to customers.
  • Meet with customer representatives from engineering, purchasing, quality and other personnel at customer locations as necessary.
  • Identify and establish necessary equipment together with the international business unit management; manage the procurement and installation of equipment.
  • Manage department performance by reviewing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and implementing other metrics where applicable; measure ongoing performance.
  • Lead the calibration, controls and software test teams in the design and implementation of services, solutions, and related technological developments for the business unit in the region.
  • Manage processes surrounding performance management, hiring, firing, salary increases, promotions, and approval of purchasing requisitions, while ensuring adherence to company policy.
  • Support benchmarking projects and research endeavors in the product market.
  • Plan and approve capital procurement of materials and services.
  • Identify tools/equipment needs and organizational skill requirements, assess gaps in key skill areas and engineering capacity, implement strategy to close the gaps and strengthen the organization, overall test efficiency, and provide adequate succession planning.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, productive work environment for employees satisfying ZF quality standards/policy.
  • Ensure positive employees relations and provide support for annual employee feedback survey.
  • Lead continuous improvement programs and provide support to team efforts.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, formal training, reviewing professional publications, establishing and expanding professional networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Ensure departmental compliance with all TS16949 and ISO-14001 requirements, ZF corporate policies, and divisional directives. Initiate and support the development of new procedures if necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Essential Skills and Experience:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in a powertrain product development environment in the automotive industry
  • 5+ years of experience in Automatic Transmissions engineering (e.g. design, test, calibration etc.)
  • 5+ years of managerial experience in a product development and team environment
  • 3+ years of international project management experience
  • Proven ability to work independently and lead engineering staff, professionals, and management with decisiveness and diplomacy
  • Proven knowledge and ability in methods of communication, motivation, negotiation, and conflict management skills with a high level of initiative/drive
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
  • TS16949 awareness training
  • English language competency
  • Ability/willingness to travel both domestically and internationally

    Preferred Skills and experience:

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 15+ years of experience with powertrain technology
  • Additional education and/or formal training in project management and finance
  • Knowledge of 5S and Six Sigma problem-solving methodology
  • Spanish and German Language Skills
